Chapter 8
As soon as Mandy realised what she was doing, she pulled away and looked at him in shock. She rubbed her swollen lips with her finger and took a step back. Brian opened his eyes slowly and looked at her.
“What am I doing?” she whispered, taking more steps back.
“Mandy…” sighed Brian, walking towards her.
She shook her head, “I am a married woman! I have a husband, What the fuck am I doing?” she continued walking backwards.
“Mandz, listen!” he sighed, still walking towards her and shaking his head.
Mandy shook her head as she continued to walk faster backwards, “I have to go home. I can’t do this!” she squeaked. She quickly turned around, stumbled for a bit and started to run. Brian watched her running away and then he reacted. He ran after her, “Mandy wait!” he called out.
Mandy just continued running, as fast as her legs could carry her in her drunken state. She kept bumping into walls as she ran, but she didn’t care. She just wanted to get out of there. Brian ran after her j and finally grabbed her wrist, pulling her back, “Mandy, listen to me!” he shouted.
“She just shook her head and looked away from him, unable to look at him in the eye, “No, I have to go home. Nicky…”
“Is not home and you’re going hysterical. Let me walk you home!” he interrupted her.
“No. No Brian. You cannot walk me home. I don’t think…I don’t think we should see each other again!” she stuttered, too ashamed to even look at him.
“Mandy, we’re just friends, that’s all!” he argued.
“We kissed!” she shrieked.
“It was just in the heat of the moment, Mandz. We have been drinking way too much too. It didn’t mean anything!” he argued.
“But it still happened. How the fuck am I ever going to face Nicky again?” she panicked.
“Look, let’s just forget it ever happened ok?” he sighed, still grabbing her wrist.
Mandy shook herself free from his grip and shook her head, “No. No I cannot forget this ever happened Brian, coz it did!” she cried, “I just wanna go home!”
With that she ran away in tears. Brian just stood there and watched her run, shaking his head with his hands on his hips. He let out a heavy sigh and walked in the other direction.
Mandy managed to hail a taxi, which took her straight home. For the first time, she thanked her lucky stars that Nicky was not there yet. She ran inside and headed straight for the shower. She hoped that the warm water would wash away all the guilty feelings she had inside of her. She just stood under the running water, letting it cascade down her body. AS the water trickled over her hair and down her face, she tried to erase every memory she had of what had happened. Only guilty feelings prevented her from doing this. She sighed and quickly got out of the shower. She wanted to be in bed by the time Nicky came home. She could not face him. She was only too sure her face would give her away. She dried herself and put her dressing robe on. She walked around the house, making sure that everything was turned off. She then heard her phone beeping and looked at it straight away on the table. She knew already who it was. Hesitantly she picked it up and slowly clicked on the button to read the message. The tears rolled down her cheeks as she read it.
I’m sorry…Luv B xxx
She contemplated on the idea of replying, but decided against it. It would only encourage him and give him the wrong idea. She held the phone in her hand and walked up to her bedroom. She heard the front door unlocking and she quickly got into bed, turning the lights off. She heard the footsteps walking up the stairs and closed her eyes, praying he wouldn’t find out she was actually awake. She felt the mattress moving and felt his hands on her hair. She concentrated hard on not grabbing his hand. She didn’t want to face him. Not yet.
“Mandy. Are you awake?” he whispered.
She couldn’t hold it anymore. She was sure he knew she was awake. She slowly opened her eyes and squinted at him, “Yes!” she answered weakly.
She saw him smile, “I thought I saw the lights on. What are you doing still up?” he asked.
Mandy yawned and shrugged.
“Have you been out?” he asked, putting his hand on her waist and rubbing it gently.
Mandy looked up at him for a while, not sure of what to say. Nicky smiled and raised his eyebrows at her.
“Yes!” she sighed, “I have only just got back!”
Nicky smiled, “Had fun?”
Mandy panicked. He never questioned her after a night out. Did he know something?
“Yeah, it was alright, I guess!” she shrugged, casually, hoping he wouldn’t question her anymore.
“Who did you go out with?” he asked, rubbing her blushing cheek.
Mandy licked her lips and felt her heart pounding against her chest, “OH, um, just a mate!” she answered quickly. She really tried not to let on as those guilty feelings soared inside of her.
“That lad? Brian, was it?” he asked.
Mandy looked at him with panic written all over his face, making him laugh.
Nicky laughed and shook his head, “Don’t look so worried babe. I know he is just a friend. I trust you!”
The fact that he trusted her and she had betrayed that trust made Mandy feel ten times worse. She tried to smile and then nodded, “How about you? Got everything sorted at work?” she asked, trying to change the subject.
“Yep!” he grinned, “And the good news is that I don’t have to go to work tomorrow!”
This took Mandy by surprise, “oh? How come?”
Nicky grinned and winked at her, “I thought about what you were saying earlier about us not spending enough time together and all that. You’re totally right. I really miss you, you know?” he smiled, brushing her hair back.
Mandy smiled and pressed her hand on top of his, “I really miss you too babe!”
Nicky smiled and kissed her hand, “So are we ok again?” he pouted, resting his cheek on her hand.
Mandy sat up in bed and hugged him tightly, “Course we are, babe!”
“I am sorry for being so snappy with you earlier. I am just under a lot of stress at work!” he sighed.
“It’s ok. I understand. I am sorry too, for throwing your dinner away. I was just...angry!” she smiled.
“How about we stop saying how sorry we are and just concentrate on showing each other!” he suggested, rubbing his nose with hers.
“Sounds like a mighty good plan babe!” she grinned, before he captured her mouth with his.
