Chapter 5
Mandy decided on cheering herself up using the old faithful retail therapy technique. She was in her 4th visit to a shop when hunger decided to strike. She realised then that she had skipped on breakfast and now it was making her stomach pay! She checked the time and realised it was midday. Probably a bit early for lunch, but now she had hunger pains and she frankly didn’t care! She settled into the nearest cafĂ©, which happened to be next door to the building Nicky worked in. As she sipped her coke, she contemplated on going in to visit him after lunch and take him a roll as a peace offering. She smiled as she studied the menu, trying to decide between the steak and kidney pie or the full English breakfast.“Bit early for lunch isn’t it?” came a voice from above her.She looked up and smiled.“Brian. Hi!” she grinned.“What on earth are you doing here?” he laughed, taking a seat opposite her.“Why? Am I not allowed?” she grinned, “And aren’t you supposed to be working?”“Great comeback!” he chuckled, “but actually, I just popped in for a sandwich. I am having a working lunch and this place make the best bacon sarnies ever!”Mandy smiled and nodded. The waiter then came and took her order. She went for the full English breakfast.“Wow,. Hungry, huh?” grinned Brian.Mandy smiled and nodded, “I skipped breakfast this morning!”“Tut tut! The most important meal of the day, and it doesn’t work when you have it 4 hours later!” he winked.Mandy laughed. After sitting there and talking for 10 minutes, Mandy’s breakfast arrived. Brian eyed it up and then looked at Mandy.“Well. I do like a girl with a healthy appetite” he grinned.“Healthy? You call this healthy?” she snorted.Brian smiled at her.“So how come you missed breakfast. You made up with the husband and didn’t have time?” he nudged her teasingly.Mandy frowned and bowed her head down, “Not quite, no! Quite the opposite actually!”The man behind the counter announced that Brian’s bacon sandwich was ready. Brian looked at Mandy and smiled, “Ok, that’ll be mine then!”He got up and grabbed it as he paid the man. He then came back to Mandy’s table.“So what happened then?” he questioned her, taking a seat again, “Did you ask him if he was having an affair?”Mandy shook her head, “Not really! Didn’t quite get round to that!”Brian’s phone suddenly interrupted their conversation. He answered it and then looked at Mandy as he hang up.“I really hate to do this babe, but I have to go. Fancy meeting up later for a coffee or something and you can tell me all about it if you want?” he sighed.Mandy thought about this for a while and then smiled at nodded. She really needed to talk about this and she had noone else to talk about it, “Sure. That would be nice!”He smiled and winked at her, “Back here at 5 then?”Mandy smiled and nodded. He winked again and picked up his coffee and sandwich from the table. In the process he picked a sausage from her plate. Mandy stared at him, stunned. He shoved the sausage into his mouth and winked at her, “That one looked bad!” he grinned with a wink.Mandy laughed lightly, still not believing her had done that.“See you later babe!” he chuckled as he walked off.Mandy stayed there eating her lunch alone. She was glad that Brian was there. At last she had someone she could talk to and console herself with. She felt bad for discussing her problems about Nicky with someone else, as she felt that she was talking badly about him behind his back. But she needed to console herself. She loved Nicky to bits, but he had changed a lot in the past few months and things between them were not getting any better. It was like he didn’t care about her at all since getting promoted. Trouble was that every time she tried to discuss this with him, he would either blow a fuse or tell her that he would make it up to her, which he never did anyway. And she knew that only too well. When she had finished her lunch, she decided on paying Nicky a visit. She ordered him a bacon sandwich and then walked into the lift in the building. The doors opened on the 5th floor and some people got in, continuing then to the8th floor, which is where she got off. She wondered how Nicky made it up there every day when he was so petrified of lifts. She smiled to herself, walked around looking for Nicky’s office. She looked to her side and saw him perched on a colleague’s table. He was laughing at something. She stayed there, hoping he would see her, which eventually he did.“Mandy! What are you doing here?” he gasped, quickly standing up and moving away from his colleague’s table.Mandy brought out the sandwich from her bag and smiled at him, “Just brought you a roll in case you got hungry!” she answered timidly, aware that all his colleagues were looking at her.“Oh right. I bought myself something earlier though!” he grimaced.“Well, maybe you cold save it for your break later on!” she shrugged, still giving it to him.Nicky smiled at took it as he gave her a peck on the lips, “Cheers sweetheart!”Mandy smiled and nodded, “Listen! I just want to say sorry for chucking your dinner away last night ok? And for this morning too!”Nicky smiled and rubbed her arms up and down, “It’s ok honey. I understand how lonely you must get and how frustrating it is!”Mandy pressed her lips together and nodded, “So does that mean you’ll come home early tonight?” she asked with a hopeful glint in her eye.Nicky winced, “not tonight I am afraid darling! There’s something wrong with the accounts. Some jerk from statistics has cocked up big time and we have to sort it out!”“Awww Nicky!” she whined.Nicky held her in his arms, not wanting her to cause a scene, “I am sorry honey, but it’s my job. I will try and be as quick as I can ok? And I shall take this weekend off too. We can go somewhere, just the two of us. How about that?”“Yeah I have heard it all before. Chances of that happening is a fine thing!” she sighed.“Mandz, come on. Let’s not go over this again, ok?” he sighed.Mandy just shrugged.“I am trying my hardest here, babe!” he whined.“Yeah, shame you don’t try just as hard at our relationship as you do with this poxy place!” she growled, pulling away sharply. Nicky sighed and shook his headm “We’ll talk about this later!”“Oooh shall I make an appointment then? Do I get V.I.P treatment for being your wife? Oh no. Sorry no hang on. I forgot. I don’t work here do I? Damn!” she hissed, folding her arms.Nicky noticed the looks he was getting from everyone and grabbed his wife’s arm, dragging her into his office. He slammed the door shut and stared at her angrily.“What the fuck do you think you are playing at?” he snarled.“I came here to being you a peace offering, Nicky! And I really hoped that you would actually realise that you do have a wife…and a life…But obviously you don’t think that is one of your top priorities at the moment.” She snapped.“I have a job to do!” he yelled.“And a wife too Nicky!” she yelled back, “You remember what one of those is, right?”“Look, I’ll see you at home later, ok?” he sighed.“Yeah, I very much doubt that!” she hissed, grabbing her bag and heading to the door. Before she opened it, she turned around to look at him, “OH, by the way! I am going out tonight!”“Where are you going?” he asked.“God knows! But I am not gonna be at home alone waiting for you to finish work! That’s for sure!” she hissed. As she opened the door, she noticed a really pretty blonde walking in. She looked at Mandy and then at Nicky and then she stopped. She had a load of papers in her arms. She looked nervously at them and smiled, “Sorry. I’ll come by later!”“Don’t worry, Charlene! My wife was just leaving, weren’t you honey?” he faked her a grin.Mandy huffed angrily and walked out, slamming the door shut. She stormed out of the office, not caring about all the looks she was getting and got into the lifts, which took her down to the lobby and that’s when she walked straight out of the building.
