Chapter 22
Mandy walked through the main office, when Mark approached her, “So…How did it go?” he smiled.
Mandy rolled her eyes and sighed, “I made a right tit of myself. I just couldn’t stop waffling on and on about nothing. I have so not got the job!”
Mark looked at her, “Did he make you call him Simon or Mr Cowell?” he asked, raising a brow.
Mandy noticed Brian staring at her when Mark asked her this and she looked back at Mark, “Simon. Why?” she asked confused..
Mark bit his lip and smiled. Mandy looked at Brian for some sort of clue, but he just looked away. Mandy looked back at Mark.
“Well. Looks like we’ll be seeing you here soon then!” he chuckled.
“What do you mean?” she asked curiously.
“When he makes someone call him Simon, it means he likes you and you have the job. If he makes you call him Mr Cowell then you don’t stand a chance!” he grinned.
Mandy laughed, “Nah. I am sure it doesn’t work that way!”
“Serious! Each and every one of us here had to call him Simon. He has even admitted it to myself too!” he laughed.
“He’s right you know?” smiled Sam, walking past her to go to the photocopying room.
Mandy looked back and Mark and grinned, “Really?”
Mark winked and nodded, “You’ll be getting a call from him later on. Guaranteed!”
“But I really cocked that interview up. All I kept talking about was how I cannot stand being late and then the fiascos downstairs with the receptionist and also about my husband!” she gasped.
“Well, you have made an impression on him somehow, coz he made you call him Simon and that means he definitely likes you!” he smiled.
Mandy looked at Brian. As soon as she turned her head to look at him, he quickly looked away. Mandy knew he was listening to the conversation and was only pretending to play with the papers on his desk.
“Is he alright?” she asked, nudging his head towards Brian.
“Nah, not really. He’s just really pissed off coz he was dumped this weekend. He’ll be fine!” he whispered.
Mandy bit her lip and nodded. Obviously, Brian had not told him anything about what happened between them, or that she was the one who ‘dumped’ him. She just stared at Mark.
“Go and talk to him. You’re mates, aren’t you? Maybe you can make him smile. We have been trying all morning, but he’s impossible to please!” he grinned.
“Oh, I seriously doubt it!” she sighed.
“Go on. Give it a try. He has been as miserable as sin all blooming morning!” he sighed, “He is putting me off my work!”
Mandy sighed and walked up to Brian, standing opposite him.
“Brian!” she sighed.
Brian ignored her and continued playing with his papers.
“Brian, I know you can hear me. Please don’t ignore me!” she whined.
With a heavy heart, he got up and sat on his chair, fiddling around with his computer. Mandy sighed, and rolled her eyes, turning around to face him.
“I know I am not your favourite person right now and I cannot blame you one bit for hating me. But you have to understand that I am a married woman. Ok, so I slept with you. I Know I said it was a mistake, but ok. I admit it. It felt good, alright? There, I said it!” she sighed, hoping to et some sort of reaction from him.
Brian quickly looked up at her. Mandy sat at his desk and frowned, “and maybe if things were different…If Nicky was being untrue, then I would probably stay with you. Fair enough, you think he is messing me around. But neither you nor 1 know that for sure. And I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is my husband, Brian. I do love him. I just hope you can understand that and we can be friends again!” she explained.
“I thought we couldn’t be friends? I thought you said we shouldn’t see each other anymore!” he challenged her.
Mandy sighed and bowed her head, “We can be if you can guarantee that we will not sleep together anymore!”
“I’m sorry but I cannot do that!” he sighed, shaking his head.
Mandy sighed and stared at him, “I know!”
Brian shrugged and started typing on his computer.
“Are you gonna be ok?” she asked softly.
Brian ignored her. He swallowed hard and went to put some paper on the printer. Mandy sighed deeply and got up form the desk. She started walking away.
2Congratulations on your job!” he coldly said, without looking up from his screen.
Mandy stopped walking, looked at him for a brief moment and walked away sighing to herself.
When she got home, she could hear the phone ringing. She quickly ran to it and answered it out of breath. She straightened up on her seat when she heard who it was.
“Mr…I mean, Simon. Hello!” she greeted.
“I would just like to inform you that the job is yours!” he said in his usual deep voice.
“oh my god, really?” she squealed. She punched the air and grinned big. She knew that Mark had told her the job was already hers, but she didn’t quite believe it until she heard Simon telling her.
“Congratulations!” smiled Simon.
“Thanks very much Mr Cowell…Er…I mean, Simon. When do I start?” she said excitedly, bouncing on the sofa.
“Well if you could come in tomorrow for some training and then you could start the day after if that’s ok!” explained Simon.
“That would be great. I’ll see you tomorrow then!” smiled Mandy, hanging up.
She got up, did a victory jig in the middle of the living room. She wanted to call someone to tell them the good news. She tried Nicky, but his mobile was switched off and he would not answer the hotel phone. She wanted to call Brian and tell him but she knew he wouldn’t take her call. She just picked up the phone and called her mother, explaining everything. When the conversation was over, she thought she would head over into town and celebrate the fact that she was no longer unemployed. The first thing she did was go to the hairdresser, where she had her hair dyed a deep shade of red and cut in layers. She was impressed with her new look, and then went round all the shops, getting clothes for her job. She picked out a few bags and shoes to go with them too ad then set off home, to have her last relaxing day as an unemployed citizen.
